The Cable Center celebrated the dedication of the John Malone Theater on September 7. The Center recently received a $1 million personal naming gift from Mike Fries, president and chief executive officer, Liberty Global, Inc.; Greg Maffei, president and chief executive officer, Liberty Media Corporation; and David Zaslav, president and chief executive officer, Discovery Communications to honor Malone.
The evening was filled with memories and appreciation, with Fries, Maffei, Zaslav, and John Sie all personally thanking Malone for his contributions, leadership and guidance throughout their careers.
Fries, Maffei and Zaslav stated: "The naming of this theater in honor of John Malone is a small token of our appreciation for all that he has done for us in our careers, as well as for the industry as a whole. Over 40 years, John has played a leading role in building the infrastructure, programming services and companies that today deliver television and high-speed Internet to the majority of Americans, and an increasing proportion of European consumers. Without John Malone, there would be no cable industry as we know it, and we are forever in debt to his vision, perseverance and dedication."
The three executives presented the gift in honor of John Malone and his contributions to the cable industry. Malone has been at the forefront of the cable industry since 1973 when he joined Tele-Communications Inc. (TCI) as president and chief executive officer. In 1999, he forged one of the largest transactions in U.S. corporate history by merging TCI with AT&T Corp. Malone has been Chairman of Liberty Media Corporation since 1990, and also the Chairman of Liberty Global, Inc. (LGI) since 2005. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for CATO Institute, Expedia, Inc., Discovery Communications, Inc., and SiriusXM, and is Chairman Emeritus of the Board for Cable Television Laboratories, Inc. as well as Director or similar capacity for various family businesses, Trusts or Foundations. Malone was named to the Cable Hall of Fame in 1999.
"We are extremely appreciative to Mike, Greg and David for this generous personal gift, and thrilled to dedicate the John Malone Theater at The Cable Center," said Larry Satkowiak, president and chief executive officer of The Cable Center. "John Malone has helped to build cable into the thriving, innovative and intriguing industry it is today, and we were pleased to be able to honor him with this special recognition."
