The Cable TV Pioneers originated at the 1966 National Cable Television Association (NCTA) Convention in Miami, when 21 members of the CATV industry were presented with "Pioneer" plaques by Stanley Searle of TV & Communications magazine.

It continued as a yearly social club for the enjoyment of attendees at the annual cable convention, and as the number of members increased, the focus of the group turned to preserving the rich history of the cable industry. Qualifications for inductees include being a part of the industry for a minimum of 20 years and sponsorship by another Cable TV Pioneer.

The Cable Center’s Cable Pioneer Exhibit features a life-size photograph of the original group of Pioneers, the shiny gold coat worn by former Cable Pioneer Executive Secretary Sanford Randolph, and other related memorabilia.
