As we launched the 2010 season, we took C-SPAN Networks’ Brian Lamb to our first community college visit– Northern Virginia, Alexandria campus (NOVA). This developed from Brian’s request to speak with students who are rarely exposed to these kinds of programs. (This request followed his Mavericks event at Harvard last February.) It was an exceptional day at NOVA, due to the thoughtful preparation led by the dean of liberal arts and several professors.
In his first session, Brian asked students in a speech class to tell him their story: “Everyone has one, and I want to hear yours.” Of the approximately 40 students, just three were born in the U.S. Many were from Palestine, Pakistan, Serbia, South America and Asia. At the conclusion of the interactive session, students gave Brian a thank-you card signed by all and a CD with music from their homelands. Brian interacted with approximately 80 students during his visit and commented that it was the best school visit he’s ever made, by far.
