Overview:
Consider a home where, prior to a trip, one parent remotely accesses and sets the home security system, the
other parent uploads home videos for the grandparents, while simultaneously downloading a recent movie
release for the flight; meanwhile, their daughter completes a homework assignment over the web and their son
plays an interactive 3D game in real time with friends in remote locations – and no one has to wait. Futuristic?
Not anymore. In fact, DOCSIS 3.0 based wideband channel bonding technology, commonly referred to as
wideband connectivity, is already in early deployment at cable systems around the world.
This display, presented by ARRIS, demonstrates how wideband connectivity will change the way consumers use
cable technology. The first piece of the exhibit demonstrates how a consumer can download data intensive
content, in this case a season’s worth of a popular television series in high-definition, in a matter of minutes.
The next demonstration points out how consumers can use the Web to remotely set up and monitor a home security system.
Technology Displayed:
Wideband Connectivity achieves its speed boost in part through "channel bonding" (using more than one
channel to transmit data) for both up- and downstream transmission. While initial implementations deliver
speeds of more than 25 time the current capacity, it is has far greater capabilities, such as upporting Internet
protocol v6 (IPv6). IPv6 allows for billions of additional IP addresses to support the growing number of portable
devices that connect to the Internet (consoles, cell phones, media players, etc.).
In a May demonstration of Wideband Connectivity’s speed and power, Comcast Chairman Brian Roberts
downloaded the entire 32-volume Encyclopedia Brittanica as well as Merriam Webster’s dictionary (over 4
Gigabytes of data and illustrations) in under 4 minutes, all while participating in a live high definition video
conference with ARRIS Chairman Bob Stanzione. Due to its remarkable capacity to quickly transmit data,
wideband connectivity will serve as the backbone for next generation voice, video, and data services.
