An Interview with Cable Hall of Fame Emcee Steve Scully

Steve ScullyThe Cable Center welcomes Steve Scully, C-SPAN’s senior executive producer and political editor, as emcee for the 18th annual Cable Hall of Fame Celebration. Scully serves as a senior executive producer and political editor for C-SPAN, and is responsible for coordinating all aspects of C-SPAN’s campaign programming for all of the network platforms. He also serves as one of the primary hosts for “Washington Journal,” “Newsmakers” and C-SPAN Radio’s “Washington Today” program.

Emily Gibson, The Cable Center’s Marketing and Communication Manager, recently interviewed Scully about his upcoming stint as emcee for the Cable Hall of Fame as well as his experiences at C-SPAN and thoughts on current happenings in the industry and politics. Below is an excerpt of their discussion.

EG: You have previously emceed many important events including the Washington correspondence dinner. What sets the Cable Hall of Fame apart?

SS:  The Cable Hall of Fame dinner is the epitome of my career and anything I’ve ever done, I think it’s going to be a lot of fun. It’s certainly a ‘who’s who’ in the cable industry from the business to the programming side. I’m looking forward to meeting the honorees. I’ve attended the celebration in previous years and I’m truly honored & humbled to serve as the emcee this year.

EG: The 2015 class represents many aspects of the industry, what are your thoughts on the honorees?
SS: This year’s Hall of Fame honorees is an impressive list of leaders in our industry.  Bill Roedy, Steve Simmons and JC Sparkman are true cable pioneers who have left an indelible mark because of their innovation, creative minds and entrepreneurial spirit. Tony Werner has spent his career leading the innovation advancements that continue to provide the very best customer cable experience.  Eleanor Winter is admired and respected in Washington, D.C. because of her leadership at NCTA, insuring that our industry interests are always heard on Capitol Hill. And of course Chris Berman is “Mr. ESPN!”  From his great catchphrase ‘Back, Back, Back,” to his years on Sports Center, his career has mirrored the tremendous growth of ESPN.  Finally, from The White House and the NCTA, to Landmark Communications and his many boards and philanthropic work, Decker Anstrom lives up to the high standards of Bill Bresnan.  Each one truly does represent an important ‘pillar’ of cable and it will be an honor to recognize their lifetime achievements at the Cable Center Hall of Fame dinner.

EG: What is your favorite part about working at C-SPAN and in politics?
SS: I have a front row seat to government, politics and public policy as events unfold.  What an amazing profession and there’s no better place than C-SPAN.  This is really the apex of political & public affairs coverage, so if you love politics like I do, this is where you want to be to follow the process.  Every day and at every turn, what we do here is witnessing how the first draft of history will be written.  For me, that never gets old, it’s always very exciting.

EG: Do you have any election predictions for 2016?
SS: I’ll make one prediction; expect the unexpected. As this field takes shape, I guarantee you it will take a lot of twists and turns. The spring and summer of 2015 will look very different compared to that of 2016. The race is taking shape, but it’s by no means set. I think if you look back in history, recent history… campaigns matter. The candidates that run an effective campaign has three elements: the money, the organization and the message…that’s what you need to win an election. But it’s far too early to see who the nominees will be on both sides, a lot can happen.

EG: Thank you for taking the time to speak with me, and we look forward to seeing you in May!

SAY YES TO THE PROM Empowers High School Girls

sayyesempowers

TLC, part of the Discovery Communications family, joined forces with The Cable Center to bring its SAY YES TO THE PROM initiative to Denver on March 19. The program, designed to build courage and self-confidence among young women, welcomed a select group of deserving high school girls from Abraham Lincoln High School as well as a Make-A-Wish® wish recipient to The Cable Center for a day of mentoring, prom dress shopping and makeovers. In honor of the day’s events, Denver First Lady Mary Louise Lee joined the festivities to read a proclamation from the Mayor’s office declaring March 19 SAY YES TO THE PROM DAY in the City of Denver.

Monte Durham, fashion director and star of TLC’s SAY YES TO THE DRESS: ATLANTA, hosted the day’s events, where each girl was paired with a mentor who served as coach, personal shopper and style assistant throughout the day. Prom dreams were granted as each of the girls had the opportunity to select from more than 800 donated prom dresses as well as a wide range of stylish accessories provided by JCPenney. Girls received hair styling and makeup, courtesy of JCPenney salon experts and Denver stylists, before taking the stage in a red carpet runway reveal. In addition to the day’s style sessions, mentoring events and a red carpet finale, First Lady Michelle Obama addressed the girls with a special video message.

Denver marked the second stop on the 2015 SAY YES TO THE PROM tour, which will this year more than double the impact of previous years touching the lives of girls from coast to coast. The tour kicked off in NYC on Monday, March 16 and will continue with additional events to be held in Washington D.C., Miami and Los Angeles until early May.

The Cable Center and SAY YES TO THE PROM were excited to welcome Make-A-Wish®, Charter Communications, Biscuits & Berries, Ceavco, Dependable Cleaners, Event Rents, Judy Chambers, RE/MAX Professionals DTC, Lockton Companies Inc., S&D Marketing and Advertising, Starz and The Bridal Collection as its local partners for the Denver event.

The remainder of the dresses will be donated to other high school girls in need in the Denver metro area. Check out our full gallery of pictures and media from the event on our website, and look for a special episode from TLC chronicling SAY YES TO THE PROM in the near future.

The Cable Center Celebrates 30th Anniversary

30th webThe Cable Center is 30! The Center started as a project of the Communications Department at Penn State University, formerly known as The National Cable Television Center and Museum (NCTM) on March 12, 1985. In 1995, we moved to Denver, and in 2001, along with a name change, we opened our state-of-the-art facility on the University of Denver campus. We have grown since that time to become the leading resource of historical information about the cable industry. We are proud of our 30 years telling the story of the cable industry and look forward to many more to come. The Cable Center staff celebrated our thirtieth year with a cake reception in March featuring an anniversary slideshow with milestone Cable Center moments. We will continue to honor our anniversary throughout the year… look for more articles about our history in future issues!
