The cable industry must constantly focus on innovation in order to stay relevant in today's fast-paced society. As cable's storyteller, The Cable Center is no different. "Innovation isn't a new concept at The Cable Center, it is a part of our past, present and future" said Diane Christman, senior vice president.
The Cable Center started experimenting with virtual and augmented reality technology in late 2013 with a goal of capturing objects to share in exhibits and videos. Two years later, we have elevated our work to the next level using the Oculus Rift headset. Website visitors will be able to view and manipulate objects in our online Barco Library technology archives as well as “step into” The Cable Center building to experience our beautiful spaces first-hand, in a two-dimensional version of our virtual reality experience on our website. On the same page a downloadable virtual reality version will be available for those with an Oculus Rift headset. The Cable Center has created a 90-second video demonstrating our VR capabilities and the benefits to the industry.
The Cable Center believes that virtual and augmented reality have practical implications in the cable industry and it is important for future leaders to be knowledgeable in these technological advancements. To that end, The Cable Center is presenting the panel “Virtual Reality in the Business Market: On the Periphery of the Next Tech Boom” at the One Day Immersion in TV, Cable and Digital Entertainment (ODI) on October 23 at Pace University in New York City.
Moderated by Evan Shapiro, NBCUniversal, with panelists: Bruce Bachenheimer, Entrepreneurship Lab, Pace University; Resh Sidhu, Framestore; and Steve Glennon, CableLabs the panel will discuss how virtual and augmented reality works, why it is important, who is using these technologies and for what purpose and the current and future business applications of the technology.
ODI is free for students and the conference, including our panel, will be live video streamed for those who are unable to attend in-person. While targeted to students and future leaders, the virtual reality panel will provide useful information to everyone in the cable industry who seeks to create new opportunities for innovation in industry technology.
In the summer of 2015, six students interned at The Center and assisted with a variety of projects in the Barco Library, business office, marketing department and web development team.
“The Cable Center’s Internship Program is an ideal way for young people to gain exposure to our dynamic industry and acquire meaningful work experience,” said Larry Satkowiak, president and CEO of The Cable Center. “It has been a pleasure to be able to work with such energetic and talented young people.”
In its third year, the Summer Internship program successfully grew upon the first two years’ successes, welcoming back three former interns and expanding the breadth of assigned projects.
Finance intern, Alex Kukuris, learned the importance of keeping “an accurate inventory of fixed and current assets in any company, big or small.” Her projects included reconciling event files with invoices, deposits and payments, as well as working with the business department with insurance information, benefits and employment eligibility. Alex is a junior business major at The University of Colorado Denver.
Mackenzie Christman, a third-year intern, worked in the Barco Library reviewing and processing digitized videos from the Western Show. She said it helped her learn about the history of the cable industry, and she is “grateful for the opportunities that The Cable Center has given her.” Mackenzie began her freshman year at the University of Colorado Boulder this fall, and hopes to return next summer to continue her professional development and education.
Marketing intern, Molly Millington said The Cable Center internship provided her the opportunity to apply lessons learned in her college classes and also expanded her knowledge via hands-on experience. Molly wrote press releases and website articles, published content on social media and helped organize marketing department files. A senior at the University of Oregon studying business with an emphasis in marketing, Molly said, “The internship has made me excited to enter the marketing world after graduation.”
Monsi Vazquez, an incoming freshman at the University of Denver and a recent SAY YES TO THE PROM participant, assisted staff in all departments. Tasks included auditing, organizing press clippings and researching the history of cable broadband. Her work at The Cable Center taught her how to work successfully in a professional atmosphere. Monsi believes that “you need to love the work you do and give it your all.”
University of Denver graduate and second-year intern, Nic van Dessel, worked with Oculus Rift equipment and software, creating a virtual reality tour of the Cable Center building with Web Developer, Steve Luiting. He said the project helped him refine and improve his coding abilities and style. Nic spent the other half of his time at The Center working closely with Audio/Visual specialist, Luke Woodruff, where he gained valuable customer service experience working with a variety of event clients. Nic said the internship was a “great opportunity to meet wonderful people and gain life-long lessons.”
Third-year intern, Wren Schuyler, a junior at the University of Denver, organized and labeled the Steve Nelson video collection in the Barco Library. She enjoyed learning about the history behind the technology that is still an integral part of current society and how it has developed over the last twenty years.
“These six outstanding young people were a pleasure to work with and added considerable value to The Center during their tenure,” said Jana Henthorn, senior vice president of academic and industry outreach.
As they completed their final days at The Center, all the interns said the program was a great learning experience and gave them knowledge that will be valuable to their future endeavors.
The Cable Center will accept applications for its 2016 Summer Internship program beginning March 1, 2016. A separate academic internship program specifically targeted to marketing, communication and web design majors accepts applications year-round. Contact the Marketing Department for more information regarding the latter program. The summer Internship Program is part of The Cable Center’s DeSorrento Opportunity for Excellence Award, which honors the memory of Justin DeSorrento by identifying motivated students who are interested in entering the cable industry.
The Cable Center hosted its annual Friends and Family picnic on August 12. Attendees enjoyed networking and catching up with Cable Center supporters and staff, while eating delicious barbeque. The Cable Center surprised retiring CEO Larry Satkowiak with a recognition celebration, including speeches from Denver industry leaders and a slideshow. Trygve Myhren toasted Satkowiak saying, “You should smile tonight, because all of us are extremely grateful to you and everything you have done.” Dr. Chuck Patti thanked him for all his support with customer experience management. Satkowiak is set to retire at the end of the year.
