JANA HENTHORN, INDUSTRY LEADER AND VISIONARY,
TO RETIRE FROM THE CABLE CENTER AT END OF 2021

Henthorn Accelerated Industry Innovation, Nonprofit Organization’s Success
through Launch and Expansion of Prestigious Intrapreneurship Academy,
Activation of Vision 2025 Business Plan

Jana Henthorn DENVER, August 31, 2021 – The Cable Center announced today that its president and chief executive officer, Jana Nelson Henthorn, will retire at the end of the year after 17 years at the nonprofit. Henthorn joined the organization in 2004 and took the helm as president and CEO in 2016.

During her career at The Cable Center, Henthorn developed a vision for the organization to expand and evolve alongside the ever-changing connectivity and content industry. Her mission to inspire and build future industry leaders led her to spearhead the development and launch of the Intrapreneurship Academy (IA) in 2017 and The Cable Center’s Vision 2025 5-year strategic plan in 2021.

As of July 2021, IA has now graduated more than 150 industry intrapreneurs from 30 different industry organizations and has expanded its curriculum into four, value-driving courses: Driving Innovation; Leading with Agility; Leading with Agility: Executive Intensive; and Leveraging Customer Experience. Under Henthorn’s stewardship, IA and The Cable Center lead and empower the industry’s new generation of bold thinkers through experiential programs, thought leadership, academic partnerships, events, and the industry’s preeminent collection of entrepreneurial accounts and objects.

“Upon becoming CEO, Jana spearheaded the next evolution for The Cable Center, ushering in the era of intrapreneurship and innovation. Jana’s legacy will be her creative, compassionate leadership and impact on our industry’s future leaders through the Intrapreneurship Academy,” said Michael Willner, chairman of The Cable Center board and CEO of Penthera Partners. “The Cable Center’s total assets are at the highest point in the past decade and beyond, and we are positioned for continued growth and success. It has been such a pleasure to collaborate with Jana. She is truly a trailblazer.”

In addition to advancing innovation and intrapreneurship, Henthorn has continued The Cable Center’s mission of honoring and celebrating the industry’s many entrepreneurs and founders, sharing their stories and leveraging their wisdom through programs like the Barco Library and Hauser Oral and Video History Project; the Cable Center Customer Centric Consortium (C5); the Edward Breen Technical Archives, and the Mavericks Lecture Series.

During her tenure, Henthorn has lifted The Cable Center’s annual fundraising event, the Cable Hall of Fame, to new, all-time heights. Most notably, in 2019, Henthorn and Willner dazzled the audience at the Ziegfeld Ballroom in New York City with their rodeo rope tricks and matching cowboy hats. And who could forget the Broadway chorus line opening at 2018’s celebration, complete with on-stage fireworks. The annual Cable Hall of Fame event is one the industry’s most exclusive and is one of the industry’s highest honors.

“The Cable Center has achieved tremendous growth and success over the last few years. I am extremely proud of all our programs, and the development and launch of our newest program, Intrapreneurship Academy,” says Henthorn. “Grit, determination, and hard work are the principles upon which our great industry was founded, and I believe that we have been entrusted with the responsibility to inspire the next era of innovation.

“I want to thank my industry colleagues, our wonderful board of directors, our esteemed honorary board of directors, our Cable Center ambassadors, our generous donors, and my many mentors and guides along the way. I am incredibly proud of my dedicated Cable Center team of collaborators and ambassadors. We have been able to accomplish so much together due to the collective support, agility, enthusiasm, and diligence of our staff.”

Henthorn will continue as CEO of the Cable Center through the end of the year. Upon her retirement, she will remain on the board of directors as the immediate past president. The board has begun the process of naming her successor.

About Jana Henthorn

A nearly 40-year industry veteran, Henthorn’s career spans all corners of the content and connectivity business. Before joining The Cable Center, Henthorn was vice president of affiliate sales for A+E Television Networks. Prior to this position, she served as vice president of operations and service fulfillment for Jones Intercable, one of the top 10 cable distributors until its acquisition by Comcast in 1999. Henthorn graduated from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana and completed her MBA at the University of Denver.

Henthorn is a beloved mentor to and champion of women in the industry, serving on the National Board and Executive Committee for Women in Cable and Telecommunications from 1995-2000. She is a Charter Fellow of the Betsy Magness Leadership Institute (BMLI), graduating from their inaugural class in 1994. In March 2020, Henthorn was accepted into and attended WICT’s Senior Executive Summit presented in collaboration with Stanford Business School.

Henthorn is the recipient of numerous leadership awards. She was named one of the Cablefax 100 (2019, 2020, and 2021); Woman of the Year by the Rocky Mountain Chapter of WICT (2018); one of Cablefax’s Most Powerful Women (2016-2020); one of Multichannel News’ Women to Watch (2016); and the WICT National Chapter Advisor of the Year (2012). Jana was inducted into the Cable TV Pioneers in 2010.

Henthorn’s leadership and impact reaches far beyond the industry. A longtime board member of Hunger Free Colorado and Electing Women Alliance, Henthorn plans to devote much of her time combatting food insecurity and supporting women candidates in politics and government upon her retirement.

Intrapreneurship Academy Continues To Gain Traction, Develops Two New
Courses To Activate And Empower Industry Intrapreneurs

New course offerings focus on executive agility and CX

DENVER, CO – The Cable Center released today its 2022 Intrapreneurship Academy course catalog centered on high-impact intrapreneurship and leadership development in the connectivity and content industry. After a year of tremendous momentum, Intrapreneurship Academy expands its current high-engagement, results-driven professional development courses – Driving Innovation and Leading with Agility – with two additional learning opportunities that prepare leaders for impact: Leading with Agility: Executive Intensive and Leveraging Customer Experience.

A 2021 Intrapreneurship Academy survey with C2HR reveals that while 58 percent of people leaders note that the way their organization operates has changed significantly, only 24 percent of HR professionals believe their leaders are prepared with the necessary skills to respond.

Jana Henthorn, president and chief executive officer of The Cable Center, states that Intrapreneurship Academy fills an industry need. “For the connectivity and content industry to continue to grow and thrive we must empower our bold thinkers. They’re looking for a place and a forum to ask questions and get resources so that they can return to their organizations and act as intrapreneurs. Intrapreneurship Academy is that place. Our graduates are flourishing, creating value, and making measurable impact.”

Investment in employee innovation capabilities pays off in multiple ways: It stimulates regular innovative behaviors that become entrenched in culture, retains high performers, and encourages continuous innovation. Henthorn believes that people leaders hold a prime position to stimulate organizational growth and engage talent in the process. “To effectively seize internal innovation opportunities, people leaders must harness the intrapreneurial talents in their teams to equip them with the tools, capabilities, processes, and mindsets to successfully advance corporate innovation.”

Intrapreneurial Skills Recognized as Indispensable

Intrapreneurship consistently ranks high on Michael Page’s top skills list. “Intrapreneurial skills include behaviors such as innovating from within, having an ownership mentality, being agile when conditions or situations change, and maintaining a customer-first approach whether your customers are internal or external,” explains Diane Christman, senior vice president and chief program officer of The Cable Center. “Through this lens, we develop Intrapreneurship Academy courses that build these skills.”

Intrapreneurship Academy 2022 Course Catalog

8-week courses:

  • Driving Innovation teaches the process, skills, and mindset to innovate from within. Participants advance a real-world project with each weekly module, adding immediate value to an organization.
  • Leading with Agility prepares leaders to quickly adapt, and often find opportunity, when situations unexpectedly change. Organizations are a human system, and people from all parts of the organization need to be prepared to flex and adapt as conditions change.
  • New! Leveraging Customer Experience helps learners develop creative and innovative solutions to the challenges of designing and delivering on the customer experience promise.

1 and 1/2-day course:

  • New! Leading with Agility: Executive Intensive brings senior level executives together to navigate business, team, and organizational agility strategy and best practices. Effectively responding to unplanned change requires a culture of agility from the top.

ROI: Return on Intrapreneurship

Since 2017, Intrapreneurship Academy has helped participants from 26 industry organizations build intrapreneurial skills. More than 200 graduates represent functions across their companies including HR, sales, engineering, software development, operations, marketing, finance, and dozens more.

Driving Innovation graduate Jeremy Meissner, principal engineer II, Charter Spectrum, began his course project with a problem. As he proceeded through the steps of the innovation process, a solution emerged that ultimately resulted in a patent for himself and the company. Intrapreneurship Academy provided me with tools I still use today in developing and architecting solutions for my company. It also helped me hone my current skills, including how to talk to colleagues clearly and get them involved in finding the best solution.”

Presale rates for 2022 Intrapreneurship Academy courses are now available through October 1, 2021. For more details on dates and courses, and to make a reservation, https://intrapreneurshipacademy.org/reservenow.

THE CABLE CENTER ACTIVATES NEW 5-YEAR STRATEGIC PLAN WITH INNOVATION AND INTRAPRENEURSHIP AT ITS HEART

Future-focused strategy energizes the next generation of changemakers through the bold investment and expansion of Intrapreneurship Academy

DENVER, CO – The Cable Center announced today their strategic shift to a more expanded, dynamic, and innovation-focused organization. The Cable Center’s thoughtful activation of their new five-year business plan, which includes a bold expansion of their Intrapreneurship Academy (IA), is their first step in bolstering their role and brand in the evolving connectivity ecosystem.

With its 40th anniversary in 2025, The Cable Center’s five-year plan takes the organization from champions of the cable industry to activators of the industry’s future agile and innovative leaders. The first activities supporting The Cable Center’s pivot is its expansion of its thriving Intrapreneurship Academy.

A Future-Focused Shift for The Cable Center

For the past year, working under the sponsorship of The Cable Center Board of Directors, The Cable Center team alongside 34 industry leaders and experts in their fields, tackled all facets of business planning from brand to finance to program development. Now, with a clear path forward, The Cable Center is focused on implementation, investing in expert-led program development and thought leadership that will create measurable value for our partner organizations. A natural connector, The Cable Center will continue to host compelling conferences, thought-provoking panel discussions, and engaging events including the Cable Hall of Fame, and will maintain its strong link with academia.

“Through this detailed work, we know affinity for The Cable Center runs deep among cable veterans and there is continued desire to modernize and advance our industry innovation story,” says Jana Henthorn, president and chief executive officer of The Cable Center. “We take our responsibility to uphold and preserve our industry’s legacy seriously. By drawing on our depth of knowledge around the achievements of the original entrepreneurs, we enable and inspire a new generation of connectivity industry innovators.”

Michael Willner, president and chief executive officer of Penthera Partners and chairman of The Cable Center’s Board of Directors, says, “On behalf of the Board, I wholeheartedly endorse that our organization is on the right track. I’m enthusiastic about our future and the impact we’ll be able to create to mark a new day for The Cable Center. The entire Board is rallied around what’s next.”

The Intrapreneurship Academy Investment and Relaunch

According to a 2020 McKinsey Survey of corporate executives, the COVID-19 crisis presents an opportunity that few feel equipped to pursue: 85% are concerned that the crisis will have a lasting impact on their customers’ needs, and yet, only 21% have the expertise, resources, and commitment to pursue new growth successfully. This is where The Cable Center’s Intrapreneurship Academy comes in.

At the direction of the new five-year strategic plan, The Cable Center is deeply investing in its Intrapreneurship Academy, relaunching its brand, its website, and expanding its course offerings to serve the need for industry organizations to build agile, innovative, value-driving leaders. The Cable Center will also provide a vibrant community for resource and idea sharing; publish primary thought leadership on intrapreneurship, agility, and CX; and continue to engage industry innovators as course speakers and mentors to inspire and empower the next generation of leaders.

“The connectivity industry is ever-expanding. As our industry evolves, so does The Cable Center,” says Chris Lammers, chief operating officer of CableLabs and member for The Cable Center Board of Directors Executive Committee. “They are making the right choices to keep pace with change and to develop our greatest source of innovation – our people.”

Through Intrapreneurship Academy’s applied learning curricula, expertise, and insights, partner companies can invest in their bold thinkers from any discipline or department to help them grow, thrive, and create value throughout their organization. Amy Blair, senior vice president and chief people officer at Liberty Global, and member of The Cable Center Board of Directors helped shape the organization’s five-year strategic plan. Liberty Global champions its high potential talent and has invested in their participation in Intrapreneurship Acadrmy since its inception in 2017. “We have seen firsthand the extraordinary benefits of Intrapreneurship Academy for our participants and how the approach complements what we do at Liberty Global,” says Blair. “Our people have honed their skills to think more innovatively and to contribute in new ways. We are excited to continue our partnership.”

Formerly known as one stand-alone course, Intrapreneurship Academy now includes two intensive content-rich courses underneath its brand umbrella, and with more on the horizon. 164 leaders have graduated from the flagship course Driving Intrapreneurship (formerly known as Intrapreneurship Academy) which offers an extraordinary deep dive into the principles of intrapreneurship to enable high performers to drive innovation and accelerate business from within an organization. Launching in the spring of 2021, Leading With Agility is a high-engagement course designed for both seasoned and emerging leaders to develop the necessary skills to thrive in an environment characterized by unplanned change and unexpected opportunity. Their premier CX course is also scheduled to launch in late 2021.

CABLE CENTER HONORS TED TURNER WITH
2020 BRESNAN ETHICS IN BUSINESS AWARD

To Be Presented During Cable Hall of Fame Celebration

DENVER (September 22, 2020) – The Cable Center announced today that Ted Turner, Environmentalist and Philanthropist, will be honored as the 2020 Bresnan Ethics in Business Award recipient. The award recognizes the late William J. Bresnan, founder and chairman of Bresnan Communications and longtime chairman of the board of The Cable Center. The award will be presented at the 23rd annual Cable Hall of Fame celebration, April 29, 2021 at the Ziegfeld Ballroom in New York City.

“It is an incredible honor to be recognized for accomplishments that were considered by many as genius and maybe a bit outrageous. Creating CNN, pretty much against all odds and with the support of my fellow cable pioneers, was a mission of pure joy and determination, surpassed only by my work and dedication to conservation and the environment,” said Turner. “Bill was a good guy, and I admired him for his integrity and good works that he upheld through every aspect of his life. My time in the cable industry was a big adventure and I treasure the lifelong friendships I made. I am humbled to receive this year’s Bresnan Award.”

“Ted’s passion for the cable industry and his commitment to philanthropy is at the core of the Bresnan Award,” said Michael Willner president and CEO of Penthera Partners and chairman of The Cable Center’s Board of Directors. “His entrepreneurial aptitude helped to form our industry and his dedication and support of numerous philanthropic and environmental causes is extraordinarily generous and unprecedented. We are honored to recognize him with this year’s Bresnan Award.”

Turner is an entrepreneur, philanthropist, sportsman, and environmentalist. He founded CNN, the first 24-hour cable news channel and TBS, the nation’s first “superstation” using satellite technology to carry its signal nationwide. Through Turner Broadcasting, he also purchased the Atlanta Braves major league baseball team and the Atlanta Hawks professional basketball team. Throughout his career, Turner also launched Cartoon Network, TNT, Turner Classic Movies and served as Vice Chairman of AOL Time Warner.

As a philanthropist and environmentalist, Turner is most noted for his $1 billion donation to establish the United Nations Foundation to support humanitarian work around the world. He also created the Nuclear Threat Initiative, which sought to prevent the use of weapons of mass destruction, and has provided extensive funding to conservation efforts through his Turner Foundation. He launched the charitable Goodwill Games and also signed The Giving Pledge, committing more than half his wealth to good deeds.

Turner is the recipient of numerous honors, including a Peabody Award and the Bower Award for Business Leadership from the Franklin Institute. He was inducted into the Cable Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Junior Achievement U.S. Business Hall of Fame in 2007. An endowed professorship at the George Washington University’s (GW) School of Media and Public Affairs is also being established in his honor, as well as the creation of the Ted Turner Exhibition Hall and Legacy Gallery at the University of Georgia

“Ted is a true industry trailblazer and his commitment to humanitarian, conservation and environmental causes is incomparable,” said Jana Henthorn, president and CEO, The Cable Center. “We are delighted to honor him with this year’s Bresnan Award.”

The Bresnan Ethics in Business Award was created to honor outstanding men and women in the cable industry who best exemplify Bill Bresnan’s longstanding commitment to ethics in business, and demonstrating societal, community, and philanthropic engagement.

The 23rd annual Cable Hall of Fame will be held on April 29, 2021, in New York City at the Ziegfeld Ballroom. Since 1998, 140 luminaries have been inducted into the Cable Hall of Fame.
